Wisdom Tooth Removal

A wisdom tooth is the third molar at the very back of the mouth, which usually comes through between the ages of 17 and 25; because of a lack of space, it often remains impacted or partially impacted. At our practice in Pangaltı, Şişli, wisdom teeth are removed by Dt. Soner Sağaltıcı.

Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?

No. Wisdom teeth that have come through properly, can be cleaned and cause no problems may not need to be removed. The decision is made after an examination and X-rays, taking into account the position of the tooth and its effect on the surrounding area.

Wisdom teeth that cause no problems are monitored at regular check-ups, and removal is only planned if a need arises. Reasons for removal can include:

  • Recurring pain, swelling or gum inflammation (pericoronitis)
  • Decay or root damage in the neighbouring tooth
  • A cyst or other abnormality in the bone
  • Constant food trapping because the area cannot be cleaned

How is an impacted wisdom tooth removed?

Fully erupted teeth can usually be removed with a simple extraction. For impacted or tilted teeth, the gum is opened, the tooth is removed in a controlled way (divided into sections if necessary) and the area is closed with stitches.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. For teeth close to the nerve, additional imaging may be requested. In our surgical procedures we work with sterile, certified materials and a careful technique that protects the tissues.

Recovery after removal

Swelling, mild pain and some difficulty opening the mouth are normal for the first 2–3 days, and usually ease noticeably within a week. If stitches were placed, in most cases they are removed at a check-up after 7–10 days.

You can continue to brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush during this time; just take care not to touch the extraction site in the first few days.

What to do after the extraction

Following these tips in the first few days after the extraction helps support healing:

  • Bite down on the gauze for the first 30–45 minutes.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least a few days.
