Dental Cleaning and Gum Treatment

A scale and polish removes the hardened plaque (tartar) that builds up on the teeth and below the gum line using special instruments, while gum treatment aims to bring the inflammation caused by this build-up under control. These procedures are carried out by Dt. Ömer Albayrak at our practice in Pangaltı, Şişli.

Why does tartar form?

Tartar forms when bacterial plaque that is not removed by brushing hardens with minerals from saliva. Once it has hardened, in most cases it can only be removed by a dentist.

Tartar build-up irritates the gums; over time it can lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and, as it progresses, to loss of the tissues that support the teeth (periodontitis).

Smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes during pregnancy and irregular oral care can increase the risk of gum problems. Gum inflammation that is spotted early can, in most cases, be brought under control with professional cleaning and regular care.

Which signs mean you should have a check-up?

If you have any of the following signs, it is worth having your gums checked:

Because these signs often progress without pain, they can go unnoticed; this is why regular check-ups are recommended even if you have no complaints.

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or on their own
  • Redness, swelling or tenderness of the gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums, or teeth that look longer
  • A feeling that teeth are loose

How is the treatment carried out?

A scale and polish is usually done with ultrasonic and hand instruments, after which the tooth surfaces are polished. If there is deep build-up below the gums, the root surfaces are also cleaned and smoothed; if necessary, this can be done under local anaesthetic and spread over several sessions.

At our practice we use certified materials, and every procedure is carried out carefully, without rushing. The treatment plan that suits you is decided together with your dentist after an examination and, if needed, X-rays.

Care after cleaning

Mild sensitivity for a few days after the procedure is normal and in most cases passes on its own. Brushing regularly, using dental floss or interdental brushes and having check-ups, usually every 6 months, slow down the build-up of new tartar.

Regular follow-up remains important after gum disease has been treated, because inflammation can return if care slips. At check-ups, the condition of your gums is monitored and a suitable toothbrush, floss or interdental brush is recommended for use at home.

Frequently asked questions

Does a scale and polish damage teeth?

No, a scale and polish carried out with the right technique does not damage tooth enamel. Any sense of gaps or sensitivity afterwards comes from the areas previously covered by tartar being exposed, and it usually passes quickly.

How often should I have a scale and polish?

For most people, once or twice a year is enough. If tartar builds up quickly or you have gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent check-ups.

Why do gums bleed?

The most common cause of bleeding gums is gum inflammation caused by plaque and tartar. If the bleeding lasts more than a few days, an examination is recommended.

Is a scale and polish painful?

In most cases a scale and polish is not painful; you may feel slight vibration and sensitivity. If deep cleaning below the gums is needed, local anaesthetic can be used for your comfort.
