Orthodontics: Braces and Clear Aligners

Orthodontics is the field of dentistry that corrects crowded or gapped teeth and problems with how the upper and lower jaws bite together, using braces or clear aligners. At our practice in Pangaltı, Şişli, orthodontic treatment is planned and carried out by Dt. Büşra Kibar Ateş.

When is orthodontic treatment needed?

Orthodontic treatment is recommended not only for appearance, but also to make teeth easier to clean and to distribute chewing forces evenly.

  • Crowded (overlapping) or gapped teeth
  • Upper teeth that stick out too far, or lower teeth in front of the upper teeth
  • Teeth that do not meet at the front or sides (open bite)
  • Crossbite and midline shift
  • Positioning teeth before dentures or implants

Braces or clear aligners?

With braces, brackets bonded to the teeth and wires attached to them move the teeth gradually; there are metal brackets and ceramic brackets close to tooth colour. For complex tooth movements, braces usually offer greater control.

Clear aligner treatment uses custom-made clear aligners that are changed at set intervals. The aligners can be removed for eating and brushing, but to be effective they usually need to be worn for about 20–22 hours a day.

Which method suits you is decided together with your orthodontist after an examination, X-rays and impressions.

Treatment time and retention

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on how complex the case is; most treatments are completed within a few months to two years. During this time, check-ups usually take place every 4–8 weeks.

When treatment ends, a fixed retainer wire or a retainer worn at night is used to keep the teeth in their new position. At our practice we work with certified, high-quality materials and careful follow-up.

Oral care during treatment

With braces, food and plaque build up more easily around the brackets, so brushing after every meal and using interdental brushes is recommended. Very hard and sticky foods should be limited, as they can cause brackets to come loose.

If you wear clear aligners, you need to brush your teeth before putting them in and clean the aligners regularly. It is also important not to skip scale and polish appointments and dental check-ups during treatment.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can you have braces?

There is no upper age limit for braces; they can also be used for adults whose teeth and gums are healthy enough. For children, a first orthodontic check-up is usually recommended at around 7 years of age.

Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?

No. Clear aligners are suitable in many cases, but for some complex bite problems braces may be more appropriate. The decision is made after the examination and records.

Do braces hurt?

It is normal for teeth to feel sensitive and under pressure for a few days after braces are fitted and after each adjustment. This feeling usually eases quickly; soft foods make things easier during this time.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

It depends on the case; mild crowding can be corrected in a few months, while more extensive cases usually take 1–2 years. Your personal estimated timeline is shared after the examination.
