Dental Prosthetics: Bridges, Fixed and Removable Dentures

Dental prosthetics is the general name for artificial teeth that replace missing teeth and restore chewing, speech and appearance. Bridges, crowns and removable dentures are planned and fitted by Dt. Ömer Albayrak at our practice in Pangaltı, Şişli.

Fixed prosthetics and bridges

Fixed prosthetics are permanently cemented in the mouth and cannot be removed by the patient. With a bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap are reduced and crowned, and the missing tooth in between is replaced with an artificial tooth attached to them.

Fixed restorations on implants also belong to this group; if an implant is needed, the surgical stage is carried out by Dt. Soner Sağaltıcı.

Fixed prosthetics feel close to natural teeth and do not move when you chew. To keep the supporting teeth healthy, the area under the prosthesis also needs to be cleaned regularly.

Removable dentures

Removable dentures can be taken out by the patient for cleaning and put back in. If a few teeth are missing, partial dentures that clip onto the remaining teeth are used; if no teeth remain, full dentures are used.

Where suitable, the retention of full dentures can be improved with the support of a few implants.

Removable dentures usually require less preparation of the teeth and offer a practical solution where a fixed option is not suitable.

Which option is right for you?

The right choice depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your remaining teeth and gums, your bone structure and what you would like. The option that suits you is decided together with your dentist after an examination and X-rays.

We use high-quality, certified materials for our prosthetics, and the impression, try-in and fitting stages are carried out with careful craftsmanship.

  • Bridge: if the neighbouring teeth are sound and the gap is small
  • Implant-supported prosthesis: if the bone structure is suitable
  • Partial or full removable denture: if many teeth are missing

Daily life and care with dentures

Getting used to a new denture usually takes a few weeks. During this time, starting with soft foods, taking small bites and chewing on both sides make it easier to adjust.

Because the jawbone and gums can change over time, the fit of dentures is checked at regular check-ups, and adjustment or replacement is recommended if needed. If you notice pain, a sore spot or a crack in your denture, it is advisable to come to the practice rather than trying to fix it yourself.

How does the treatment work?

  1. Examination and planningThe missing teeth are assessed with an oral examination and X-rays, and the options are explained to you.
  2. Preparation and impressionsIf needed, the supporting teeth are prepared and precise impressions are taken; temporary solutions can be used during this stage.
  3. Try-inThe fit, colour and bite of the prosthesis are checked in the mouth and any necessary adjustments are made.
  4. Fitting and check-upThe prosthesis is fitted; small adjustments are made at check-ups while you get used to it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a bridge or an implant?

It depends on the person; there is no single right answer. A bridge requires the neighbouring teeth to be reduced, while an implant requires sufficient bone; after the examination, the advantages and limitations are weighed up together with you.

How long does it take to make dentures?

It depends on the type of prosthesis; fixed bridges are usually completed in a few sessions, and removable dentures in a few weeks including the impression and try-in stages. The exact timeline is planned after the examination.

Will a removable denture affect my speech?

A short adjustment period for speaking and chewing in the first few days is normal. Most people get used to their denture within a few weeks; if you have a sore spot or discomfort, it is advisable to come in for a check-up.

How should dentures be cleaned?

Removable dentures should be taken out every day and cleaned with a soft brush and water; under fixed prosthetics, clean with dental floss or an interdental brush. Regular check-ups are important for the health of the prosthesis and the gums.
